About Danielle LaPorte

my past life

I never went to university. For this, I am very grateful.

A LONG TIME AGO … I had a real job, co-running The Body Shop Canada’s Department of Social Inventions. We refurbished Romanian orphanages, and ran recycling and rock-the-vote campaigns. So thankfully, it wasn’t really a real job.

I was the Executive Director of a Washington-DC think tank where I managed a team of brilliant, analysts to create future scenarios for the likes of the Pentagon, IBM and the State of the World Forum. I hung out with Navy Admirals and signed NDAs every other day. Trippy.

Before that, I ran my own communications and business development agency, “promoting visionary people and projects,” including a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, a philosopher-physicist, a rogue economist, the Pulitzer-winning co-founder of Greenpeace, and a few old pop stars.

NOT SO LONG AGO … I was featured in Elle, Body + Soul, Vogue Australia, Better Homes & Gardens, Globe & Mail, The National Post, The Huffington Post, Entertainment Tonight, and numerous talk shows. I wrote Style Statement: Live By Your Own Design, which The Globe & Mail deemed, “Haute Minded”. It ranked as an Amazon bestseller and caught the attention of Oprah. That was fun. I built a big website and media presence based on that brand, and then went super rogue. Creative sovereignty is bliss.

In reflection I believe there are two things we most often do – first we simply pass or second if it is a really uber cool opportunity we try smash ourselves as the round peg into the square hole because it so exquisite and it’s an opportunity we’d be silly to pass.

Addressing the first

If we simply pass on the whole thing then aren’t we doing a great disservice all the way around? Not putting the opportunity in touch with the people we know have the skills knowledge and passion is not fulfilling our highest contract with our self. And it may leave the opportunity one degree away from a perfect fit – if only we took the time after saying, “not right” – now – to think “who” right now.

Addressing the second

This is just awkward and uncomfortable for you and the opportunity – don’t do it. Just reflect how ever cool the opportunity is – it wasn’t meant for you.

What am I talking about?

Well, 3 months ago I received an “out of the blue” phone call from a LA production company looking for a very specific type of person to audition/interview for an online reality TV show opportunity – to be the financial professional in the Pacific Northwest. The fellow’s voicemail went something like this, “You don’t know me but Marcia Brixey suggested we should talk with you……”

How cool was that? When Marcia had been approached by the opportunity and learned it was not a fit for her, she suggested they contact me.

How often do we let these wonderful opportunities for selflessness wash over us and think of others when the opportunity is not right for us?

That one phone call more than 3 months ago – while cool – and the opportunity potentially amazing was not the best part of this experience. The best part of the experience is knowing that Marcia herself thought enough of me and my work and my passion to suggest this opportunity be in touch with me.

When I started my journey to expand my circle to build relationships with people to add resources to refer my clients to I NEVER imagined that along the way an army of advocates would be built and that I would receive support that I cannot even describe.

Good Things Come To Good People

I believe that the universe works in mysterious ways and that Marcia’s act of selflessness will not go unnoticed. Her work is magnificent and marvelous. The information she personally shares through her MoneyWise Women seminars and her book is of the highest quality and caliber. How will her opportunity manifest? I certainly do not know.

What I do know however is my awareness of her and golden opportunities for her have been heightened. AND it feels good to be thinking of someone else and their success.

Who will you think of today?

Be conscious of opportunities today that could benefit from what is not right for you. I have noticed when you shine a beautiful light on someone else – a glowing reflection will wash over you.

Enjoy your day.

I have come to the realization that many things come easy for me – and that I am likely not living up to my complete and full potential.

This weekend I participated in my second ½ marathon at The Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Half . This journey started for me nearly six months ago when my good friend Betsy Talbot shared that before she left for trip around the world she wanted to compete in a ½ marathon.

I followed my usual tendency of being a chronic supporter to friends who want to attack a big audacious goal, hopped on the website and registered and said to her, “no time to think about it…go register right now and you had better be the next number after mine.”

Sometime about December I thought I should start running – see I had made a huge mistake when I previously entered my last ½ – I didn’t train – I was in pretty good shape – and had a pretty cavalier attitude – after all, I was only “walking” 13.1 miles – how hard can that be?

As it turns out, it was really damn hard. Add to that it snowed that November morning – and I don’t think I moved for a week. I was 36 and arrogant.

I said that was my last ½ marathon and I meant it.

I love being active – I love hiking – I love taking long walks – but I have never been a strong swimmer or runner. I never felt comfortable with my running style, feeling more like a Clydesdale than a gazelle – when people would ask me if I ran, I would reply “only if being chased – and if he’s cute….not real fast.”

Though this time I did want to do it – I wanted to finish and do well. So I started to run. I couldn’t even run one mile the first week between Christmas and New Year’s. Over time though, one mile became two – then three and so on.

At the end of my first 5 mile run – I began to get a pain in my foot that never seemed to go away no matter how much ice and elevation – it turns out to be tendonitis.

Now, I don’t know about you but I am now less inclined to run injured – so I give it time to heal. And start running again – and the foot starts hurting again. So I blow it off – keep walking which I enjoy and figure – I’ll run what I can and walk the rest – but at least I’ll finish.

Me and The Betsys on our way!

Oh, did I mention that all of my in-laws were flying into town; many to run this deal too – with goals like – run the ½ in less than 2 hours and for two others to finish in less than two hours and 15 minutes?

So, with not enough training miles under my belt and an injured foot I hop in the car at 6:00 am with my good friends The Betsys.

How do you really talk to yourself?

As the race starts I begin a conversation with myself – about who I am. Yes, I am one of the few of the 27+ thousand without an iPod – and decide to use the next few hours to have a good personal “retreat.” I begin realizing about mile 2 that I have a lot of negative self talk I use in my life (See previous paragraph about running slowly – and add to it my response when people would say to me’ “I didn’t know you were a runner” – and I would reply, “I am not”). I ponder this for the next mile, as I have always described myself as the eternal optimist – the glass ½ full kind of gal.

What is keeping you from going from good to great?

After mile 3, I come to a conclusion – I am doing just enough to get by in many areas of my life. Things tend to come relatively easy to me and work just hard enough to be good – and at mile 4 I realize this is what is keeping me from being truly great.

Mile 5 and 6 have me talking to myself about doing more than “just finishing”– looking at total time – my minute per mile time and calculating if there’s a shot at finishing in 3 hours as I had boldly stated the night before.

Is your technique as good as it could be?

At mile 7 I have a sharp pain enter my hip……never had that happen before and begin to wonder if I should stop and stretch and then begin thinking of all the other things that will start to happen if I stop to stretch …. and just then I hear two women talking as I come up on them about how one is having hip pain – and the other shares that when that happens for her she focuses on tightening her stomach muscles and it releases the pain….I give it a whirl – and what do you know – it works.

At mile 7 1/2, I begin to question if the course pre-view video I had previously watched was really this course or not…sure didn’t seem this long in the 4 minute pre-view video!

Once you get past ½ way there’s no sense in turning back!

Miles 8-10 I am doing a lot of self talk “I can do this” – “Debb you are doing great” – “I am a runner” – “I will finish in 3 hours.”

The next 2 miles challenged me more that I have ever been challenged before – and I turned deep inside myself to find a strength I didn’t know I had to make it off I-90, through downtown and onto the viaduct.

One mile from the finish I felt a power come from deep inside me and I began to run like I have never run before- – and in those moments, I found my stride. It may not be what I always perceived in other people as pretty or elegant, but it’s mine – and in that moment on Saturday I owned it.

It didn’t matter anymore, how it looked to other people – it’s how it feels to me.

I will always remember seeing my husband, best friend and nephew –as I rounded the corner and passed the Mile

The lessons I learned in 13.1 miles on Saturday are ‘game changers’ for me.

Oh, and if you see me walking around town with my ½ marathon medal around my neck – don’t be surprised – I want people to know who I am – I AM a runner.

You may not find the answer in 3 hours or 13.1 miles, but I do encourage you to ask the question - Who am I?

PS – My official time 3 Hours 10 Minutes 17 Seconds

So many layers of frustration I felt last Thursday:

Layer 1 – I had put my husband, my friends, my clients on hold for a week;

Layer 2 – I had felt so good walking into the test - I knew I was going to pass;

Layer 3 - I have to take it AGAIN!

In my ‘previous life’ I never would have told anyone I was even attempting a major exam….because – yep, what if I didn’t pass…what would other people think of me, and what would I say? Here are the interesting things I learned this past week.

The universe has a unique sense of humor – the week I commit to completely focus on my studying I ended up with no less than 6 invitations to attend, BBQs, Anniversary Parties, Women’s Conferences, AND my wonderful husband changes his plans to be gone for the weekend and stays home instead – ok universe, I AM committed – stop toying with me. (There’s a lesson here – what’s your take?)

Standardized tests that work on tricky language as a premise for testing “knowledge” – are not an indicator of how good you are as a practitioner in your chosen field. (Always carefully read a situation –whether it’s with words or people.)

Admitting my less than perfectness – and spectacular “not passing” on Facebook was one of the greatest gifts I could ever have given myself. (Was showered with support and encouragement to pick myself up, dust myself off, and get the damn thing rescheduled and pass.)

I think I finally get “it” – after many subtle and twice as many not-so subtle reminders that when I make myself vulnerable– I receive my greatest growth.

I don’t remember how old I was when I read this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Our strength grows out of our weaknesses.” While this line may be a familiar one to many of you – I imagine few have read the rest of the verse which says; “Not until we are pricked and stung and sorely shot at, awakens the indignation which arms itself with secret forces. A great man is always willing to be little. Whilst he sits on the cushion of advantages, he goes to sleep. When he is pushed, tormented, defeated, he has a chance to learn something; he has been put on his wits, on his manhood; he has gained facts; learns his ignorance; is cured of the insanity of conceit; has got moderation and real skill. The wise man always throws himself on the side of his assailants. It is more his interest than it is theirs to find his weak point. The wound cicatrizes and falls off from him like a dead skin and when they would triumph, lo! he has passed on invulnerable. Blame is safer than praise.”

How do you accept praise and encouragement? Is it with grace and gratitude? Or, do you deflect and deny? When you commit to something do you give in to distraction or stay the course? Are you ‘reading’ the situations in your life accurately, or are you missing the tricky language? And finally – when an outcome is not what you desire, do you give-in or go-on?

Enjoy your week!
